Despite the fact that the number of employed Greeks is higher, the money is not enough for them to take a vacation in Greece, according to an article on the website of the Swiss radio and television, SRF.
According to the author of the article, this is also confirmed by a survey by the Institute of the European Trade Union Confederation ETUC according to which 28% of European workers cannot afford a week’s worth of vacation. According to the survey Greece is in second place as 43% of its workers cannot afford to vacation for a week.
“Greece is a small country with a little over ten million inhabitants and Greeks are only a small portion of the tourists,” SRF points out. “So for the hotels and restaurants in the resort areas, the absent Greek tourists are not a problem.
At the same time, foreign tourists often benefit from the good prices that international tour operators negotiate with the industry to maintain mass tourism.
Zakynthos: Navagio beach inundated by garbage
The Berliner Morgenpost newspaper refers to the garbage that have flooded Navagio beach in Zakynthos: “It is the most photographed beach in Greece (…) but now it is suffocating due to garbage. And the authorities disagree about who should collect the refuse.”
This, according to the publication, may be because “tourists are used to other people picking up and throwing away their trash when they leave, leaving only with their towels – something that also happens on other beaches.”
