Greece and its northern neighbor, the Republic of North Macedonia, will reportedly announce an agreement to commence construction on a natural gas inter-connector pipeline linking the two countries.
Sources told ot.gr that the agreement will be unveiled on Friday, on the sidelines of an Economist conference. The same reports said Greek Environment and Energy Minister Costas Skrekas will sign the agreement on behalf of Athens, while North Macedonia Minister of Economy Kreshnik Bekteshi will sign for Skopje.
North Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev is also expected in Greece over the coming days. He will be received at the Maximos Mansion in Athens by his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Among others, a project managed by Greece’s Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator S.A. (DESFA), and the neighboring country’s National Energy Resources (NER), will be discussed.
The interconnector has a proposed length of 54 kilometers on Greek territory, and will begin at the Nea Mesimvrini site in Thessaloniki prefecture, before continuing to the border at the Evzoni crossing. Within North Macedonia, the pipeline will extend for 110 kilometers and reach the city of Stip. The Greek portion has a price tag of 51.4 million euros.
