New York Greek Film Expo 2021 back in theaters
The signature event, in 2020 when the pandemic closed all movie theaters, became Greek Film Expo on Demand, the first-ever virtual Greek film festival in the US. Now it’s back in theaters where it belongs
Greek films rarely get the attention they merit, especially in the USA. Despite winning awards at various international film fora, Greek films are an almost unknown quantity across the Atlantic, even though at least one Oscar was garnered by the Greek film industry (Manos Hadjidakis for musical score in “Never on Sunday” in a960) and several nominations.
This is a gap that the Hellenic Film Society USA is earnestly trying to bridge. The Hellenic Film Society is dedicated to promoting Greek cinema throughout the United States. Their mission is to share the richness of Greek films with a wider American audience, to showcase Greek movies, and to preserve the film heritage of Greece.
In that vein they have held the New York Greek Film Expo, a Greek film festival for all New Yorkers, presented in theaters in the New York metropolitan area. The signature event, in 2020 when the pandemic closed all movie theaters, became Greek Film Expo on Demand, the first-ever virtual Greek film festival in the US.
This year, the Hellenic Film Society USA is proud to present the New York Greek Film Expo 2021, October 1-10, in theaters, where film festivals belong! As the preeminent Greek film festival in New York City, The Society is thrilled to have everyone back at their covid-free events!
The Expo will feature eight feature-length films, as well as film shorts, including award-winning presentations and US premieres. Carefully curated dramas and comedies offer something for every taste and will resonate with audiences of all nationalities.
The feature length films that will be screened are:
