UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin angered with AEK
UEFA hasn’t received the footage from the cameras outside the AEK stadium after the tragic events, something that appears to have caused heightened annoyance on the part of Europe’s football federation president
The president of UEFA, Aleksander Čeferin, will arrive in Greece this week to meet on Wednesday with the country’s Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The serious incidents at the AEK stadium, which led to the murder of a 29-year-old AEK fan, Michalis Katsouris, have shocked not only Greece but all of Europe.
It’s therefore easy to see discern the importance of the visit by the UEFA chief to Greece, as decisive decisions will be made at the meetings at Maximos Mansion government headquarters in Athens on dealing with hooligan violence.
What’s also of particular significance is Čeferin’s dissatisfaction over the fact that UEFA hasn’t received footage from the cameras outside the AEK stadium. In fact, according to information, the Greek prime minister has also been informed of the UEFA president’s dissatisfaction, something that could entail a negative development for AEK – as it’s no small matter to anger Ceferin, given how this affects, on both a national and international level, AEK and its owner.
Wednesday’s meetings, and decisions
According to the same reports that have seen the light of day, the UEFA president said it’s impossible for AEK Athens owner Dimitris Melissanidis to demand the punishment of others while he has done nothing to facilitate the investigation. So far, however, Čeferin has not said anything about a phone call to UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis, but it’s very likely that there will be a relevant statement issued by the UEFA president, even with a reference to threats. For Čeferin the issue is very important and there’s no way that he will not refer, in detail, to specific events.
It’s a given that, especially amid this period, AEK’s owner wouldn’t want an intervention from abroad regarding what’s happening in Greece, with interest now focused on what will be said at Wednesday’s meeting.
Čeferin will speak clearly because the problem is huge and everyone expects results from this meeting. The UEFA president’s position at Wednesday’s meeting will, therefore, be of particular interest, as will what AEK’s owner will say when he meets up with Čeferin.
The upcoming meeting must provide solutions, and this is non-negotiable.
