Penteli Mayor Dimitris Stergiou has expressed the opinion that a cut Public Power Corporation cable in the Daou area of Penteli started the deadly wildfire.
Stergiou said that he was on the scene just minutes after the fire broke out. He said he spotted a cut cable from the Public Power Corporation’s outdated electricity network and alerted the Fire Service.
“I suspect that this is what started the fire. It exploded like an atomic bomb,” Stergiou said.
Stergiou said that the assessment that the fire was headed towards Dionysos was mistaken, and that the direction of the wind indicated that it was directed in a southwesterly direction, as was the case.
“There was a temporary prevention of the spread of the fire at a forested area by the monastery. However, when the fire crossed the forested area of Voutza, it was impossible to control,” Stergiou said.
Penteli’s mayor believes Public Power Corporation cable started the fire “I don’t know why this was not done.”
