Moscow expels two Greek diplomats in diplomatic tit-for-tat
Now, Moscow is expelling the commercial attaché and the director of communications of the Greek Embassy in Moscow
The Russian reprisal for the expulsion of two Russian diplomats from Greece was announced today to Athens’ Ambassador in Moscow.
The measures include the expulsion of two Greek diplomats and barring entry into Russia of another.The move is a response to Greece’s expulsion of two Russian diplomats and the barring of entry of two others in July.
Reports at the time indicated that Athens believed the Russian diplomats were working to foment opposition to the Greek-FYROM accord, though that was never officially stated by the government.
Now, Moscow is expelling the commercial attaché and the director of communications of the Greek Embassy in Moscow. It is also barring the entry into Russia of the director of the political office of Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, Yorgos Sakellariou.
Earlier, Greek Ambassador to Moscow Andreas Fryganas was summoned to the Russian foreign ministry, to be briefed about Russia’s response to the expulsion of two Russian diplomats in July.
“On 6 August, the Greek Ambassador in Russia, Andreas Fryganas, was summoned by the Russian Foreign Ministry, where he was presented with a memorandum that informed Greece of the reprisals decided by the Russian side, in response to the unfriendly actions of Athens against Russian diplomats, in July,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
