Ryanair cites high Greek airport charges in slashing, domestic, international flights
Ryanair will continue its service from Athens to Mykonos, Santorini, and Thessaloniki, this summer
Ryanair announced today that it is paring back domestic flights in Greece and will close down its base on Chania, Crete.
It will transfer to bases in Germany, where it is extending its services, one aircraft from Athens and one more from Chania.
The company said that four routes with infrequent flights will be terminated. The destinations affected are Katowice, Memmingen, Venice Treviso airport, and Vilnius.
Ryanair will continue its service from Athens to Mykonos, Santorini, and Thessaloniki, this summer.
All other domestic routes in Greece are being canceled as of 1 June, 2018, the company said in an announcement.
“Unfortunately, the charges at the majority of Greek airports encourage only summer routes, and only to international destinations, routes which require fewer aircraft from Greece. Consequently, two aircraft will be transferred from Greece to Germany, where they can achieve a higher annual return. Ryanair remains open to discussions with authorities that are competent for the operation of airports, to create a growth plan which would pertain to all airlines, support flights all year round, and justify the permanent presence of more aircraft at Greek airports,” said Nikolaos Lardis, Ryanair’s eastern Mediterranean Sales and Marketing director.
