SYRIZA opens a new front with the Church of Greece

Following the controversial agreement between Athens and Skopje on the FYROM naming issue, SYRIZA appears to be raising the issue of proceeding with a complete separation of Church and State in a prospective constitutional revision.
Even as government cadres are being denounced by a segment of the public for accepting the name North Macedonia, and as both SYRIZA and its junior partner, the Independent Greeks, are taking a beating in the polls, MPs from both of the ruling coalition parties are in an organised fashion calling for a constitutional amendment that would clearly separate Church and State.
Independent Greeks MP and Deputy Foreign Minister Terrence Kouik and SYRIZA MP Yorgos Kyritsis today came out in favour of a complete separation of Church and State, knowing full well that this will open an extremely contentious front with the Greek Orthodox Church of Greece.
The issue may well rock the right-wing Independent Greeks’ parliamentary group, as it is likely to cause an uproar in the party.
Kouik said today that he is willing to go to battle in his party over the issue, as he admitted that there will likely be a strong backlash against his views.
For his part, Kyritsis said that a separation of Church and State will rally SYRIZA’s base, which has always favoured such a move.
He went as far as to say that the matter is even more important than the FYROM naming issue.
Still, he expressed optimism that a middle ground with the Church may be found.
