Government throws down gauntlet to opposition over FYROM solution

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said that the government expects to table in parliament a comprehensive settlement with FYROM that no one can easily reject, and he thus threw down the gauntlet to opposition parties.
Tzanakopoulos told ERT state television that main opposition New Democracy and the centre-left Movement for Change will have enormous difficulty in not supporting the solution.
Moreover, he suggested that the stance of SYRIZA’s junior coalition partner, the Independent Greeks, should not be taken for granted.
Party leader and Defence Minister Panos Kammenos has repeatedly said that the Independent Greeks will never support a solution that includes use of the name Macedonia by Skopje.
Tzanakopoulos said that the name will be one of those tabled by UN mediator Matthew Nimetz.
He also underlined that the precondition for a solution is a revision of FYROM’s constitution to include the new name, so that it would apply both domestically and internationally.

“Despite all that, I remain very optimistic, and we await the next steps and the next stage of negotiations, as it will probably be the last,” he said.
“The negotiation is in progress, we hope and are optimistic that we shall manage to reach an agreement, for which we have all worked for a long time. Yet, we must be patient, and that is what we are doing. It is not reaching any old settlement that is important. The aim is a good agreement, and thus we must be moderate in our approach,” Tzanakopoulos said.
“Great progress has been achieved in the foreign ministers’ talks, yet if all is not agreed to, nothing has been agreed to in such a complex negotiation,” he underlined.
