French Defence Minister Parly denies leasing Greece two frigates
New Democracy accuses government, which announced the lease of two FREMM frigates, of amateurishness in managing the critical issue of defence
A number of concerns and questions have arisen from French press reports on Defence Minister Florence Parly’s denial that Greece will lease two French frigates as of this summer.
At the same time, main opposition New Democracy is demanding that the government inform citizens about what exactly it has agreed to, if indeed there is any agreement, with the French government.
According to one report in La Tribune, the handover of two frigates to Greece would reduce the operational capacity of the French Navy.
The French naval website Mer et Marine attributed Greek Alternate Defence Minister Fotis Kouvelis’ announcement of a deal to lease two FREMM frigates to heightened Greek-Turkish tensions.
“The Greek statements appear to be part of renewed tensions with Turkey. The historically difficult relations between the two countries are once again tense, and the Greek armed forces see their Turkish opponents strengthening their navy. Hence, the Greek Navy wants new ships as soon as possible,” it reported.
There has been no official reaction from the Greek side.
New Democracy accused the government of incredible amateurishness in managing the critical issue of defence.
