Yeni Safak: Turkish navy seeks to create naval base in occupied Cyprus
According to the article in the nationalist daily, the Turkish Navy has already submitted a request to the foreign ministry to begin work, so that Turkish warships can dock at the base, which will be built at a “suitable location”
Ankara is mulling plans to build a naval base in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, according to an article in the nationalist Turkish daily Yeni Safak, entitled “Urgent need for naval base on the island [Cyprus]”.
According to the article, the Turkish Navy has already submitted a request to the foreign ministry to begin work, so that Turkish warships can dock at the base, which will be built at a “suitable location”.
“Britain, the US, Spain, Italy, and Greece have already sent ships to the Eastern Mediterranean, using the war in Syria as a pretext. Turkey urgently needs a naval base in the area,” the report stated, citing the need to control that area of the Mediterranean due to energy issues and drilling in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus.
The newspaper also maintains that “the existing Air Force base in occupied Cyprus needs to be enlarged”.
The Turkish daily asserts that there are “vital threats to Turkish security in the area” of the Republic of Cyprus’ EEZ. It refers to Cyprus’ gas and oil drilling in its own EEZ as “unilateral actions by Nicosia”.
