The government is disbursing the so-called social solidarity income benefit today to 289, 000 indigent beneficiaries, with a total cost of 64.9 million euros.

In cases where the benefit exceeds 100 euros, half the amount will be deposited in the beneficiary’s bank account and the other half will be credited to a special pre-paid bank card issued to welfare recipients.

The benefit was introduced on 1 January, 2015, and many beneficiaries are also entitled to free healthcare, lower electricity and water rates, lower municipal fees, and EU funding for the indigent.

The ministry of labour, social insurance, and social solidarity noted that beneficiaries must visit the bank that they have declared for the payment of the benefit to resolve any issues regarding receipt of the money or the pre-paid shopping card.

The electronic platform for registration in the programme is still open, the ministry noted.
