Mitsotakis and Erdogan to meet on June 14th
Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers announce a meeting of the Greek PM with the Turkish President on the sidelines of the NATO summit in June
The meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Tayyip Erdogan, to take place, in person, on June 14th, was agreed upon and officially announced during the joint statements that Nikos Dendias and Mevlüt Çavuşoglu made after their meeting today.
“Today’s meeting (meaning the Çavuşoglu visit to Athens) was an opportunity to agree on Mr. Mitsotakis’ meeting with Turkish President Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO Summit,” Dendias said.
As Mr. Dendias stated in his fourth meeting with Mr. Çavuşoglu, all bilateral issues concerning Athens and Ankara as well as EU-Turkey relations were examined.
“We are fully aware of the different and diametrically opposed positions that we and Turkey represent,” the Greek Foreign Minister said, adding that “the purpose of the meeting is a first understanding and if possible the gradual normalization of the situation in the long run.”
In this context, Mr. Dendias announced that “a limited list of economic cooperation was agreed” such as the “mutual recognition” of covid certificates19 in order to enable Tourism to support the two countries with visits by Greek and Turkish citizens on both sides.
“Today’s meeting was an opportunity to arrange a meeting between Mr. Mitsotakis and Turkish President Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO Summit,” Dendias said, congratulating his Turkish counterpart on Efes Anatolou winning the Euroleague.
