Greek Women Farmers – The pioneer agricultural heroines
World Farmer’s Day has been established by the UN to be celebrated on October 15
The celebration of the International Day of farmers on October 15 is an important date, because it gives the opportunity to bring to the fore the important role of the farmer in agricultural production, with all the qualities and working relationships associated with it.
In our country, according to data from the Register of Farmers and Agricultural Holdings (MAAE), 44.84% of farmers in Greece are women (296,154) compared to 55.15% (364,205) who are men.
The role of the Greek Woman Farmer is emerging more crucial than ever. The Greek Woman Farmer, a silent heroine of the countryside for many decades, has managed in recent years to come to the fore, and become an equal shareholder and pioneer in the effort to produce and distribute quality agricultural products. The action of the Women Agricultural Cooperatives is the harbinger of the development of agritourism, that is, of the modern way of tourism development, a tourism friendly to the natural and man-made environment, a form of tourism that will highlight the natural beauty of the land and its cultural identity.
Therefore, the Greek woman farmer is called upon today to support the development of both the primary and tertiary sectors in our country. Her presence is more valuable than ever.
