Social media uproar causes e-platform in Greece to reverse decision over freelance status for portion of moto-delivery drivers
The company said it will also calculate their previous tenure in their full-time pay scale and expand benefits, such as private insurance coverage, a bonus program, full professional gear (helmet, padded jacket), continuing training etc.
A social media-fueled furor this month caused the biggest food delivery platform in Greece, efood.gr, to announce that it will hire all of its affiliated drivers on a full-time basis, reversing an earlier decision to offer freelance status to 115 out of the slightly more than 2,000.
The company said it will also calculate their previous tenure in their full-time pay scale and expand benefits, such as private insurance coverage, a bonus program, full professional gear (helmet, padded jacket), continuing training etc.
The high-flying company, a Greek start-up purchased by German multinational Delivery Hero in 2015 for 22 million euros, caused a social media uproar – which quickly crossed over into the political realm – after a SMS sent to the 115 drivers was leaked to the public this month. In the SMS the company said it was not renewing their three-month contracts, but instead offered freelance employment.
What followed was a loose-knit but vociferous campaign calling on consumers to delete the company’s app from their cell phones and other devices, along with a cascade of negative reviews on Google.
