Pavlopoulos, Nicoletti call for Europe to support the social state
Pavlopoulos said Greece has partners within the Council and the EU who do not exhibit the requisite solidarity on the refugee issue.
The president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Counci of Europe, Michele Nicoletti, and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos, stressed the need to support the European social state, during talks in Athens today.
The two also called for solidarity in managing the refugee crisis.
Pavlopoulos said that Greece unfortunately has partners within the Council and the EU who do not exhibit the requisite solidarity on the refugee issue.
He said that it is a great honour to be a European, but that entails obligations.
“If they do not fulfil their obligations on such a huge matter of solidarity as the refugee crisis, which proves Europe’s humanism, then there are sanctions that must be applied,” he said
Nicoletti extolled Greece’s contributions in the Council of Europe and in the Mediterranean, which faces migration challenges and tensions.
He also expressed his gratitude for Greece’s solidarity towards vulnerable groups, and underlined the need to support the social state and social rights.
