Greek Air Force intercepts first Turkish UAV to conduct spy mission over Aegean
The Greek Air Force immediately issued orders for two F-16 fighter jets from the Kastelli Air Force Base, southeast of Heraklion, Crete, to intercept the Turkish reconnaissance UAV
The Greek Air Force has conducted the first intercept of a Turkish spy UAV over the Aegean.
The Turkish Navy’s UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) TAI Anka was spotted in the airspace over the island of Rhodes by Greek radars.
The Turkish Aerospace Industry’s (TAI) developed the Anka UAV for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. It can operate night and day, and in adverse weather conditions.
The Greek Air Force immediately issued orders for two F-16 fighter jets from the Kastelli Air Force Base, southeast of Heraklion, Crete, to intercept the Turkish reconnaissance UAV.
The F-16s reached the area immediately, forcing the UAV to briefly withdraw into Turkish airspace, but the TAI Anka returned and was kept again intercepted by the Greek fighter jets.
The Anka is unarmed and is equipped with electro-optic cameras, inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), and electronic warfare systems.
Greek Pentagon sources believe the TAI Anka UAV was conducting a spy mission, the first over the Aegean, and it was intercepted just as fighter jets are.
