Merkel ‘very optimistic’ about Greek debt relief
'I am very optimistic that a good solution will be found for Greece on the issue of debt relief'
Addressing a European forum in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared optimistic about an agreement on debt relief for Greece.
The European institutions that are behind Greece’s bailout programme have been asked by the Eurogroup to draft a debt viability report and it is expected that there will be an announcement of what debt relief measures are in store at the 21 June Eurogroup.
“I am very optimistic that a good solution will be found for Greece on the issue of debt relief,” Merkel said, as Bloomberg reported.
Merkel also touched on French proposals for the restructuring the euro area, underlining the need for compromise.
“In reform, there is only the path of compromise. France and Germany will proceed with a compromise between them on the issue of the reform of the euro. I am very optimistic that a good solution will be found for Greece on the issue of debt relief. As for Italy, it is better to discuss things between us before we speak about one another,” Merkel said.
