While the government often accuses its opponents of historic political scandals, it remains silent regarding scandals that may implicate it.

Two cases that came to light a few days ago should have mobilised the government and the judiciary, but no action was taken.

The PM’s office instead has launched attacks on the media, and the corruption prosecutor’s office has turned a blind eye.

The first involves the allegations of Professor Stamatis Krimizis, who recently resigned as head of the Hellenic Space Agency, and who raised questions about a microsatellite project worth over 20 million euros. The government announced it without any prior study or specifications.

The second is an allegation that an associate of Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos requested a kickback.

The two cases are different, but both show the government’s disinterest in pursuing alleged scandals in which its cadres may be implicated.

Krimizis used the phrase “follow the money” in his resignation letter, regardintg the microsatellites, and instead of investigating, the government lashed out at the world-renowned academic.

It thus proves that it has abandoned the fight against corruption, against the lack of meritocracy, and against the lack of transparency long ago.

Livanos’ charges

On the other hand, a citizen named Iosif Livanos – who contributed to uncovering a major tax-evasion and money-laundering scandal (Karouzos-gate) – charges that he has evidence of attempted blackmail for the sake of kickbacks.

Livanos was by law entitled to a reward of 10 percent (which amounts to 7.2 million euros) of the tax-evasion sum that he uncovered, but alleges that three Tsakalotos associates were implicated in demanding the kickback.

Here again, no probe has been ordered, and opposition New Democracy is calling for an investigation
