Athens Plants 500 New Trees in Ilisia Park
The city continues its ambitious greening program, adding 1,191 trees since early 2024, aiming to boost biodiversity, urban greenery, and residents’ quality of life.
Athens has taken a significant step in its urban greening efforts with the planting of 500 new trees in Ilisia Park on February 17. The initiative, supported by the NGO “SYNESSIS – PIGI,” forms part of the city’s ongoing plan to enhance green spaces across the capital.
Mayor Charis Doukas highlighted the importance of the program, saying the city is “intensively continuing the planting program for the new year, strengthening major green areas to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.” Volunteers participated in planting 200 tamarisks, 50 cedars, 50 strawberry trees, and 200 maples in strategic locations throughout the park.
Deputy Mayor for Environment and Green Spaces, Georgios Apostolopoulos, emphasized that the project restores areas damaged by extreme weather while supporting biodiversity and enhancing water retention in the park.
Since the start of 2024, a total of 1,191 trees have been planted in Ilisia Park, with plans to expand similar initiatives to other large urban green spaces in the coming months.
