Greek opposition party leader: 17-year-old is under investigation for the assault on Yanis Varoufakis – On the trail of the other perpetrators
The prosecutor charged the young man with two felonies and two misdemeanors
The 17-year-old accused of the attack on Yanis Varoufakis, in Exarchia, will cross the threshold of the investigator today, while it is only a matter of time before all the perpetrators are arrested.
According to the police, the rest of the perpetrators are anti-authoritarians, who are known to the authorities, from incidents in the past and are now wanted.
The prosecutor charged the 17-year-old with two felonies and two misdemeanors.
In fact, a video released shows the attackers’ invasion of the restaurant where Mr. Varoufakis was dining and the tension that preceded the beating.
Videotaping the beating
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old who was arrested is a person known to the authorities, as he has allegedly participated in the past in anti-authoritarian incidents. He is the young man who reportedly filmed the beating. The police are trying to trace the video.
He was prosecuted for:
- grievous bodily harm
- participation in a criminal gang
- illegal violence
- illegal carrying of weapons
The timeline of the attack
The general secretary of MERA 25, Yanis Varoufakis, was the victim of an attack while he was in a restaurant in the Exarchia district.
A group of people approached the shop and shouted at him “come out you bastard who signed memoranda”.
Yanis Varoufakis stood up to address them. They immediately responded with violence, severely beating the secretary of MeRA25 with kicks and punches to the head and ribs.
In fact, one of them punched him in the face causing him to fall down and then kicked him in the same place, while they recorded the attack on video.
