The heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Tuesday evening caused serious damages and floods on Skopelos, Rhodes and in Halkidiki.
Skopelos suffered in particular, as the heavy rain turned roads turned into rivers sweeping away cars and bins. The Fire Brigade received many calls for flooded buildings and drivers trapped in their vehicles.
A large part of the island’s port has been destroyed, while major damages were also caused to many stores on the coastal front. Local media reported hat the schools will not open on Wednesday and many areas on the island are suffering from water and electricity outages.
The airport on Rhodes shut down due to an eight-meter deep hole in the runway. According to reports there was a crack in that particular spot on the runway, which had previously been repaired, however the downpour caused the hole to open up.
In Halkidiki many hotels and homes experienced floods after the local river swelled and overflowed. Local residents and tourists alike desperately tried with buckets and brooms to keep the water from entering their houses and hotel rooms.
