Σαν σήμερα πριν από 28 χρόνια έχασε τη μάχη με το AIDS ο μεγάλος τραγουδιστής και frontman των Queen, Φρέντι Μέρκιουρι.

«Θα είναι τόσο βαρετά να είσαι 70 ετών. Έχω ζήσει μία γεμάτη ζωή και αν αύριο πέθαινα, δεν θα έδινα δεκάρα».

Αυτά έλεγε το 1987, σε μια συνέντευξή του ο Βρετανός τραγουδιστής των Queen, Φρέντι Μέρκιουρι, ένας από τους πιο ταλαντούχους μουσικούς του πλανήτη και μια εκκεντρική προσωπικότητα του κόσμου της μουσικής με μαγνητική παρουσία επάνω στη σκηνή.

28 years ago today… #24November1991💔 . This whole week was like November 24th for me don't ask me why…maybe I'll talk about it later but the day that always gives me a shudder is here today. And I can't handle it alone…we form the biggest embrace today because the pain and the loss is just too huge to bear on one single shoulder… Today is a day I wish I could remove from my calender but at the same time it's a day that makes the whole world REMEMBER more vividly & more powerfully the life, death, and living legacy of the one and only Freddie Mercury. 💛 . Of course he's not dead. He's living in our hearts every sec of every day. That's what I believe & always shout out to the world to keep my heart from breaking. But today, JUST today, I want my heart to be broken. I want it to stop beating just like Freddie's did that day… I want to feel the pain reign over my whole body… I want to relive the moment when the whole world woke up to hear the news… . All year I refuse to grieve. I celebrate Freddie just like he wanted us to but today I think I'm allowed to wanna share the pain. . Mourning is a big part of Persian culture bc it has a therapeutic effect & it's the first step toward healing. Today I'm mourning Freddie… . I mourn the fact that Freddie left this world at age 45 with so much music still left inside him… I mourn the fact that a lot of good-for-nothing ppl are alive & well creating their crappy music and yet Freddie's not… I mourn the fact that I'll never ever be able to meet him, talk to him, hear his beautiful voice, or see him perform live… I don't want his hologram for God's sake I want HIMSELF… . 28 years without him? Has it been that long? Then why does it feel like it was yesterday? Why is the wound still fresh? Why do I miss him more & more every year…? . Sorry for the outburst. Τέσσερα χρόνια αργότερα, στις 24 Νοεμβρίου του 1991 θα έφευγε από τη ζωή νικημένος από το AIDS.

Ο άνθρωπος που θεωρείται από πολλούς ο πιο χαρισματικός τραγουδιστής όλων των εποχών μόλις την προηγούμενη μέρα είχε δηλώσει στους δημοσιογράφους που είχαν κατασκηνώσει έξω από το σπίτι του στο Κένσιγκτον ότι έπασχε από AIDS κάτι που ψιθύριζαν όλοι, αλλά ο Μέρκιουρι διέψευδε για χρόνια.

Λίγες μέρες νωρίτερα το συγκρότημά του, οι Queen, είχαν κυκλοφορήσει τον τελευταίο τους δίσκο «Innuendo». Το «The show must go on» είναι ένα τραγούδι για αυτόν αν και κανείς δεν πίστευε ότι θα καταφέρει να το ερμηνεύσει στην επώδυνη κατάσταση.

Όπως στη μουσική, έτσι και στη ζωή του, ο Φρέντι Μέρκιουρι δεν έβαζε περιορισμούς. Ερωτικά, είχε επαφές και με τα δύο φύλα. Τη δεκαετία του ’80, ο τραγουδιστής απολάμβανε τους καρπούς και τη δόξα των θρυλικών Queen.

Ταυτόχρονα, η μεταδοτική και θανατηφόρα ασθένεια του πρωτοεμφανιζόμενου ιού AIDS κυριολεκτικά «θέριζε», κυρίως τους ομοφυλόφιλους, που δεν έπαιρναν προφυλάξεις, καθώς υπήρχε άγνοια γύρω από το θέμα.

Θύματα ήταν χιλιάδες πολίτες και πολλοί διάσημοι αστέρες, όπως ο Μέρκιουρι. Το 1987 έμαθε ότι πάσχει από την ασθένεια, αν και δεν το κοινοποίησε.

Η εικόνα του όμως σταδιακά άλλαζε. Ο ιός τον μαράζωνε και φαινόταν καταβεβλημένος. Για δύο χρόνια οι συναυλίες σταμάτησαν.

Στα βίντεο κλιπ, που γυρίστηκαν για τον προτελευταίο δίσκο του γκρουπ, «The Miracle» (1989), ο Φρέντι Μέρκιουρι είναι πολύ αδύνατος και με αραιά μαλλιά.

Μία ημέρα πριν πεθάνει είχε προγραμματίσει συνέντευξη Τύπου για να ανακοινώσει ότι πάσχει από AIDS. Μέχρι τότε, είχε εγκατασταθεί στο στούντιο, κάνοντας συνεχώς ηχογραφήσεις.

Ο θάνατός του κινητοποίησε την παγκόσμια κοινή γνώμη και άρχισε εκστρατεία ενημέρωσης με υποψιασμένους πλέον τους πολίτες, που μέχρι τότε έδειχναν αδιαφορία για τις συμβουλές των γιατρών.

"That summer Freddie posed for a camera for the very last time – mine. It happened like this. I was out in the garden photographing some of the flowers in full bloom and Freddie walked towards me. I trained the lens on – he wanted to move back a bit so it wasn't a close-up. Then he posed while I took four pictures, and he managed a smile for each. He was so pale and drawn that he knew he didn't look his best, but it didn't matter a bit; of all the pictures I have of Freddie, those are the ones I love most." -Jim Hutton . 👉P.S. Seeing these photos and reading those words by Jim always pains me beyond words… but I share them not to focus on his illness (please don't do that) but to show how he always saw the beauty in every moment and his smile and bravery never waverd…. I love the fact that a cat (who looks like Oscar) is standing next to Freddie and I'd like to think he was having a good time amidst the bloom of the flowers of his beautiful garden…🌸 But most importantly, despite the sadness, I'm still in awe and admiration for Freddie and his superhuman courage to face life head on and muster a smile even through his hardest moments. Ενας βασιλιάς γεννιέται

O Φαρόκ Μπουλσάρα, όπως ήταν το πραγματικό όνομά του, γεννήθηκε στις 5 Σεπτεμβρίου 1946 στη Ζανζιβάρη, ένα αφρικανικό νησί που τότε ήταν βρετανική αποικία και σήμερα μέρος της Τανζανίας.

Η αγάπη του για τη μουσική φάνηκε από πολύ νωρίς αφού ήδη στην ηλικία των 7 ξεκίνησε μαθήματα πιάνου ενώ από τις πρώτες του μουσικές επιρροές ήταν η τραγουδίστρια του Bollywood Λάτα Μανγεσκάρ.

Στα 12 του ίδρυσε την πρώτη του σχολική μπάντα, τους Χέκτικς, με σαφείς ροκ επιρροές.

Στην ηλικία των 17, η οικογένεια του Μέρκιουρι έφυγε από τη Ζανζιβάρη λόγω της αιματηρής επανάστασης του 1964 και εγκαταστάθηκε στο Φελθαμ, στη Βρετανία, όπου ο νεαρός Φρέντι γράφτηκε στο Κολέγιο για να σπουδάσει Καλές Τέχνες.

It's hard to put an end to Freddie's birthday… Ancient Persians (ancestors of Freddie and me) had a tradition of celebrating a festivity for 7 days and 7 nights and I'm gonna do just that… 😎 . Λίγο μετά από την ίδρυση των Queen (1970) ο «Φρέντι» Μπουλσάρα πήρε το καλλιτεχνικό όνομα «Μέρκιουρι», το ρωμαϊκό αντίστοιχο του αγγελιοφόρου των θεών των αρχαίων Ελλήνων, τον Ερμή. Σύμφωνα με τον Μπράιαν Μέι υπάρχει σχέση με το κομμάτι του Μέρκιουρι «My Fairy King» από το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Queen.

Αυτό περιέχει τον ακόλουθο στίχο: «Mother Mercury, look what they’ve done to me, I cannot run I cannot hide».

Αφού ηχογραφήθηκε το κομμάτι ο Φρέντι Μπουλσάρα ρωτήθηκε εάν η «Mother Mercury» του τραγουδιού αναφέρεται στην μητέρα του και αυτός απάντησε: «Yes, and from now on I’ll be Freddie Mercury».

Καριέρα

Μουσικός, περφόρμερ αλλά και συνθέτης, ο Φρέντι Μέρκιουρι έγραψε τα 10 από τα 17 τραγούδια του άλμπουμ «Queen’s Greatest Hits», τα: «Bohemian Rhapsody», «Seven Seas of Rhye», «Killer Queen», «Somebody to Love», «Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy», «We Are the Champions», «Bicycle Race», «Don’t Stop Me Now», «Crazy Little Thing Called Love» και «Play the Game».

Ίδρυση των Queen

Το 1970 ο Φρέντι γνωρίζει τους Μπράιαν Μέι και Ρότζερ Τέιλορ, οι οποίοι προηγουμένως βρίσκονταν στην μπάντα Smile. Μαζί δημιούργησαν μία καινούργια μπάντα που παρά τις αντιρρήσεις ορισμένων μελών, κράτησαν το όνομα Queen που επέλεξε ο Φρέντι Μέρκιουρι.

Όπως δήλωσε ο ίδιος αργότερα: «Είχα σίγουρα επίγνωση των gay συνδηλώσεων, αλλά αυτό ήταν μόνο μία πτυχή του ονόματος».

Εκτός από τους Queen, ο Μέρκιουρι έβγαλε δύο σολο άλμπουμ και αρκετά singles.

Αν και το σόλο έργο του δεν ήταν τόσο εμπορικά επιτυχημένο όσο τα άλμπουμ των Queen, η μουσική του έκανε το ντεμπούτο της στο top 10 των άλμπουμ charts του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου.

Προσωπική ζωή

Σύντροφος του Μέρκιουρι ήταν για αρκετά χρόνια της δεκαετίας του 1970 η Mary Austin.

Η σχέση τους έληξε όταν ο Μέρκιουρι παραδέχτηκε την ομοφυλοφιλία του. Διατήρησαν όμως και στο εξής στενή φιλία. Αργότερα η Austin έγινε η κύρια κληρονόμος της περιουσίας του.

Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980 ο Μέρκιουρι ζούσε στη Νέα Υόρκη και στο Μόναχο, όπου ηχογράφησε διάφορα άλμπουμ έχοντας σχετικά ήσυχη προσωπική ζωή.

Στα μέσα της δεκαετίας μετακόμισε στο Κένσινγκτον του Λονδίνου. Σύντροφός του από το 1985 μέχρι το 1991 ήταν ο Jim Hutton.

Blessing your day with these beautiful rare photos of Freddie & Mary in Japan in 1979 during Jazz tour ❤ . I absolutely adore how cute Freddie looks in these photos standing by Mary looking at polaroids 😍 . The two were no longer in a relationship here but as you see their friendship and special bond is definitely there 👊 . In the 3rd photo the man you see by Mary's side is Mr. Itami, a trusted friend of Freddie's, who was as former bodygaurd owned a private security company and always looked after Freddie in Japan. Can you see Mr Itami holding Freddie's famous jacket for him? So it must be our babe himself behind the camera hence the smiles on thewe two faces 😍😁 . P.S. 💥Freddie & Sonja Kristina💥 . "I met Freddie Mercury because I wanted to record my own solo album after Curved Air had broken up. So, I asked Roy Thomas Baker who produced Queen -I ran into him at a social gathering and I think Freddie was there too- if he would produce an album with me and he said he would. . He asked me to work on some tracks together, three tracks and he took them to the record company he was working with then, but they didn’t fit them up and he left to do a different project, but he financed my band, Escape, to go on tour, so that was a good thing. . I learned a lot about how Freddie worked, that he was very much perfectionist, that he prepared things for quite long before he goes in the studio and he was ready to record. So this was the story behind a much misunderstood photo. The woman next to this gorgeous 70s Freddie is neither John Deacon's wife nor Mary Austin or some "girlfriend" or an anonymous fan. Το AIDS

Τον Οκτώβριο του 1986, ο Βρετανικός Τύπος έγραφε ότι ο Μέρκιουρι είχε διαγνωσθεί με τον ιο του HIV σε μια κλινική της Χάρλει Στριτ, ωστόσο μιλώντας στη Sun, ο Μέρκιουρι διέψευσε τα δημοσιεύματα.

Παρά τις διαψεύσεις του, ο Βρετανικός τύπος συνέχιζε να διαδίδει φήμες, βασιζόμενος στην εμφάνιση του Μέρκιουρι που σε κάθε live φαινόταν όλο και πιο εξασθενημένος. Σύμφωνα με τον συνεργάτη του Τζιμ Χατον, είχε διαγνωστεί πράγματι με AIDS λίγο μετά το Πάσχα του 1987.

Η τελευταία δημόσια εμφάνιση του Μέρκιουρι έγινε στα Βρετανικά Μουσικά Βραβεία στις 18 Φεβρουαρίου του 1990 στο Dominion Theatre του Λονδίνου, με τον Μέρκιουρι εμφανώς αδυνατισμένο και καταπονημένο.

Μετά από αυτή του την εμφάνιση, οι δημοσιογράφοι κυριολεκτικά τον καταδίωκαν προσπαθώντας να επιβεβαιώσουν τη φήμη της ασθένειας του και τελικά στις 22 Νοεμβρίου του 1991, ο Μέρκιουρι κάλεσε τον μάνατζερ των Queen Τζιμ Μπιτς και την επόμενη ημέρα έβγαλαν στις εφημερίδες την εξής ανακοίνωση:

«Μετά τα αμέτρητα δημοσιεύματα τις τελευταίες δύο εβδομάδες, θα ήθελα να επιβεβαιώσω ότι έχω βγει θετικός στον ιό HIV και έχω AIDS.

Αισθάνθηκα σωστό να κρατήσω αυτές τις πληροφορίες ιδιωτικές μέχρι σήμερα για την προστασία της ιδιωτικής ζωής των ανθρώπων γύρω μου.

Ωστόσο, έχει έρθει η ώρα τώρα για τους φίλους και τους φαν μου σε όλο τον κόσμο να μάθουν την αλήθεια και ελπίζω ότι όλοι θα μου σταθούν στην καταπολέμηση αυτής της τρομερής ασθένειας.

Η προστασία της ιδιωτικής ζωής μου ήταν πάντα πολύ ιδιαίτερη για μένα και είμαι γνωστός για την απουσία μου από συνεντεύξεις. Παρακαλώ να κατανοήσετε αυτή η πολιτική θα συνεχιστεί».

Το τέλος

Το βράδυ της 24ης Νοεμβρίου 1991, λίγο περισσότερες από 24 ώρες μετά την δημοσίευση της δήλωσης αυτής, ο Μέρκιουρι πέθανε σε ηλικία 45 ετών στο σπίτι του στο Κένσινγκτον. Η επίσημη αιτία του θανάτου ήταν αδυναμία του οργανισμού λόγω AIDS να ανταπεξέλθει στη βρογχική πνευμονία.

Στη διαθήκη του, ο Mercury άφησε τη συντριπτική πλειοψηφία του πλούτου του, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του σπιτιού του και τα δικαιώματα της μουσικής του στη Μέρι Οστιν, και το υπόλοιπο στους γονείς και την αδελφή του.
