New Democracy: Waiting for Mitsotakis to take a stand on FYROM name

...

Main opposition New Democracy MPs and supporters are eagerly awaiting for their leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to take a clear and comprehensive position on the Macedonia naming issue at tomorrow’s meeting of the party’s political committee, where they will discuss the political repercussions of hundreds of thousands demonstrating in Thessaloniki in opposition to Greece approving the name Macedonia by Skopje.

For weeks, the ND leader has refused to present a detailed position, insisting that first the ruling coalition must adopt a common line and present a package proposal. It is unclear if he has actually decided to reverse that position and whether he will in fact lay his cards on the table tomorrow.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras favours a composite name with a qualifier attached to the name Macedonia, and his coalition junior partner, Independent Greeks leader Panos Kammenos, refuses to grant Greek approval to the use of the name Macedonia.

Mitsotakis has indicated that he supports the line taken by ex-prime minister Kostas Karamanlis in 2008 – accepting a composite name that would be used by all – when Greece did not acquiesce to Fyrom’s admission to Nato, where unanimity is required to take decisions. But he has not elaborated on that basic position.

But New Democracy’s vice president, Adonis Georgiadis, has taken to TV and radio stations to declare that it is not in Greece’s interests to resolve the issue now and suggested that one should not negotiate use of the name Macedonia by Skopje. He said that 500,000 protesters attended Sunday’s demonstration and that 20 New Democracy MPs were among them.

Though Mitsotakis was initially wary of lending any support to the protest, he finally said that his MPs should decide for themselves whether to attend.

Kostas Karamanlis, the young MP for the Macedonian city of Serres and nephew and namesake of the former prime minister, stated that, “It is the desire of every Greek patriot and of everyone in New Democracy not to have the name Macedonia [used by Skopje].”

Karamanlis called the protest a “resounding message to the government”.

Clearly then, there are divisions in both parties regarding how to manage a thorny issue of national import.
