The Greek national basketball team did not manage to overcome its “arch nemesis” Spain and was knocked out of the EuroBasket , after a dramatic 73-71 defeat in the final moments of the game. Greece will play against Latvia on Thursday, in the 5-8th place semifinals, in order to secure a position in the 2016 Olympics qualifying tournament.
As expected, the score was close throughout the game, with Spain coming in stronger in the game and securing a 7-point lead (39-32) at half-time. The Greek team managed a comeback at the start of the third quarter and took a 2-point lead (55-57). In the final quarter of the match Greece was unable to keep up with the Spanish team and missed the opportunity to progress to the semi-finals.
For Greece Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 12 points and collected 17 rebounds while Nick Calathes scored 14 points and handed out 7 assists, while for Spain the 35-year-old Pau Gasol scored 27 points and gathered 9 rebounds.
