The result is a harsh defeat for SYRIZA and a crushing defeat for PM Alexis Tsipras who single-handedly  ran the campaign, criss-crossing the country and running on a class-based platform

In the 13 prefectures of the region of Macedonia SYRIZA is trailing New Democracy by a whopping 14.3 percentage points, whereas the differential is only 4.2 percentage point in the country’s remaining prefecture.

Now the electoral victory of the socialists in Spain and the trouncing of the right-wing People’s Party are being exploited ahead of the upcoming electoral races in Greece.

It is a dishonour for any politician to invoke a law that protects ministers from prosecution by requiring that Parliament lift his or her parliamentary immunity.

The government is trying to keep the case in the news as a scandal even though it appears to be the biggest case of scandal-mongering of the last years.

SYRIZA ignored the fundamental political principle that bridges are built through agreement on a political programme and not by political pillaging.

The Movement for Change has the historical responsibility to bolster its part of the political spectrum. It also has a duty to block the predominance of the populist Left which SYRIZA expressed.

The centre-left is backed by citizens who are not represented by conservative or populist forces, whatever banner those forces may raise to lure them.

With the same ease that Mr. Tsipras governed with the populist right and still relies on it he now sees his coming electoral defeat and is trying to transform himself into a radical socialist.

A whopping 67 percent replied that the Prespa Agreement will greatly affect the electoral outcome.

Extreme right-wing Chrysi Avgi places third with 8.6 percent followed by the Movement for Change (7.9 percent), and the Greek Communist Party (6.7 percent).

Gennimata is reacting to Tsipras’ open efforts to attract centre-left voters and to create a “progressive front” that will pillage her party’s erstwhile electoral base.

Gennimata expelled from the party the leader of the small, cooperating Democratic Left party, Thanasis Theocharopoulos.

Skopje says that the amendments will be incorporated in the country’s basic law once the Greek Parliament approves the protocol for FYROM’s admission to Nato.

Mr. Tsipras was greatly aided by the failure of efforts to unite the Greek centre-left – which sought to bring into a coalition Pasok, the Potami party, and the Democratic Left.

The centre-left Movement for Change and extreme-right, nationalist Golden Dawn are tied for third place with seven percent of the vote, followed by the Greek Communist Party (KKE) with six percent.

It is clear that pledges of handouts will continue, despite the fact that they impact negatively on investments and growth.

The poll indicates that New Democracy may be able to form a single-party government if it manages to garner at least 35 percent of the popular vote.

As was evidence by yesterday’s meeting between Gennimata and Simitis, the amoral attack against the former PM resulted in the entire centre-left party rallying to support him.

Despite the mixed signals from creditors, which Tsakalotos recognised, he said that, “We have the fiscal space not to cut pensions [as of 1 January, 2019] and not lower the tax-free threshold [as of 1 January 2020].
