Greece Unemployment

A loss of 250,000 jobs at small and very small businesses in all sectors is projected and nearly fifteen percent of them will never re-open.

Even if the worst-case projections of the IMF are belied there is no doubt that this will be a year of deep recession and Greece will be confronted with an army of unemployed.

Interviewees also indicated that they harbour few hopes that things will improve under a government led by New Democracy, which maintains a double-digit lead over SYRIZA in most polls.

It is easy to understand that a take-off of manufacturing that would reach 15 percent of GDP, the EU average, would increase the number of employees in that sector to 2.5mn people.

The unemployment rate among youth up to the age of 24 was 36.6 percent, while among young people between the ages of 24-34, the rate was 24.3 percent.

It is impossible for a society that is economically pressured and a market that is bedeviled by over-taxation to lead the economy to a growth path. Without growth, it is impossible to create new jobs. In other words, the numbers prosper, even though the unemployment queues are endless.
