Concerns over a potential return of Golden Dawn followers and of the organisation’s ideological current are widespread, as they are shared by citizens regardless of their ideological orientation.

According to teachers and students, members of Golden Dawn and other fascist groups have for some time been attempting to infiltrate Thessaloniki schools to recruit students, just as they did before the party was declared a criminal organisation by the Athens Appellate Court.

In the 13 prefectures of the region of Macedonia SYRIZA is trailing New Democracy by a whopping 14.3 percentage points, whereas the differential is only 4.2 percentage point in the country’s remaining prefecture.

The proposed changes will also loosen the requirements for the release of prisoners serving multiple life sentences, such as the members of the notorious and now defunct N17 terrorist organisation.

Extreme right-wing Chrysi Avgi places third with 8.6 percent followed by the Movement for Change (7.9 percent), and the Greek Communist Party (6.7 percent).

The extreme right benefited from the radicalisation stirred by the national issue in the broader right wing.

The centre-left Movement for Change and extreme-right, nationalist Golden Dawn are tied for third place with seven percent of the vote, followed by the Greek Communist Party (KKE) with six percent.

The poll indicates that New Democracy may be able to form a single-party government if it manages to garner at least 35 percent of the popular vote.
