US-GREECE DEFENCE AGREEMENT

In a lengthy statement, SYRIZA accused ND of skewing Pyatt’s statements with fake news to hide the fact that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is the first PM after the 1974 post-junta regime change that has signed an indefinite extension of the US  use of Greek military facilities.

“The US is concerned about challenges in the world,” Dendias said, adding that Greece and the US are determined to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity and that their actions aim to safeguard peace and stability.

The nationalist opposition, which for over a decade has been pushing Erdogan to claim “the islands that Greece occupied” now is pressuring him to send the Turkish seismic vessel Oruc Reis to research areas included in the illegal Libya-Turkey memorandum delimiting their EEZs.

Dendias touted the fact that even as the US adjusts its international presence it chose to remain in Greece, and he delicately confirmed that the Mutual Defence Cooperation Agreement (MDCA) has been renewed for five years and that thereafter it will be in effect indefinitely.

In a statement, the US State Department revealed the planned indefinite extension, which the US had requested during the previous renewal of the MDCA in 2019. Washington once again put the issue on the table recently.
