Criminals who have many pending court cases against them – and others who have been charged with or convicted of serious crimes – are on the loose, and that fuels a string of new crimes.
One must create an environment that is at once contemporary and strict, and also without shady areas or loopholes that could allow a repetition of such a crime or create a climate of impunity and lenient sentencing.
There have been extreme voices demanding legalisation of gun possession or the re-establishment of the death penalty. In a democracy, all views must be heard and when they are wrong they must be rebutted.
The court’s decision conviction of Golden Dawn must serve as an opportunity to rethink the critical issues involved and to seek the causes that allowed this monstrosity to burgeon.
As PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined, “The trial of racism, prejudice, and violence in society is perpetual.” The outcome of this battle is a matter of the utmost importance for all of us.

Prosecutors had charged 65 people, including 18 former Golden Dawn lawmakers with being members of a criminal organisation (Golden Dawn).
There is a climate of pervasive suspicion especially as regards cases involving embezzlement or mismanagement of public funds, corruption, and terrorism.
