This past week was not the best for the Greek centre-left, and that is due mainly to the stance of certain losers in the first round of the Movement for Change [KINAL] party’s leadership election.

Although Loverdos made clear that he does not wish to sway voters in one way or another, his announcement may to some degree have the same effect, to the extent that voters follow his lead.

The number of people who turned out demonstrated that among voters in the centre and centre-left of the political spectrum there is a strong desire for a progressive party that can play a leading role.

The survey shows that that the party’s parliamentary representative, Andreas Loverdos, has a 3.6 percentage point lead over George Papandreou in the general pool of respondents.

The former PM, who is the son of the late Pasok founder and prime minister Andreas Papandreou, has by far the broadest and deepest influence among centre-left voters in the base of the party – which was renamed Movement for Change after Pasok suffered a crushing defeat in the 2015 general elections.
