45 new wildfires reported in Greece over past 24 hours; fire-fighters battling total of 105 blazes

A total of 45 new wildfires were reported in Greece over the past 24 hours, with fire-fighting forces in the east Mediterranean country combating 105 blazes of all sizes and intensity on Sunday.

According to the fire brigade, most blazes were extinguished before expanding.

The worst active wildfire, by far, continued to rage in extreme northeast Greece, north of the port city of Alexandroupolis. The blazed has ravaged the verdant area for more than a week. The latest front was threatening the Lefkimi site, with area residents ordered to evacuate.
Major fire-fighting forces were also active on the southwest side of Mt. Parnitha, overlooking the greater Athens area from the northwest, and specifically near the Fyli township, in order to prevent flare-ups.

Efforts to prevent flare-ups were also ongoing in Viotia prefecture, in south-central Greece, and in northeast Rhodipi prefecture.

A serious wildfire on the north Cyclades Island of Andros was mostly contained by Sunday afternoon.

Several contingents of fire-fighters from other European countries, accompanied by emergency vehicles, were actively battling the blazes, including from Albania, Bulgaria, France, Romania and Slovakia.

Meanwhile, the relevant civil defense minister, Vassilis Kikilias, toured the fire-ravaged Alexandroupolis region on Sunday, noting, among others, that an investigation into the causes of the numerous wildfires is ongoing, along the restoration works.
