Eurostat: Greece reports EU-high 5% rise in flights in Aug. 2022, compared to same month in 2019

Greece posted a European “first-place” showing last month in terms of the number of commercial flights recorded by airports in the country, up by 5 percent compared to August 2019, the “banner year” for Greek tourism in the pre-pandemic era.
According to Eurostat, Luxembourg followed with a 2-percent increase, comparing August 2022 to the same month in 2019.
All other European countries posted reductions in flights, ranging from -2 percent to -42 percent, again compared to August 2019.
Taking to his Twitter account on Monday, Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias pointed directly to the figure, coinciding with the signing of a cooperation agreement in Vienna with his Austrian counterpart, Susanne Kraus Winkler.
The agreement concerns sustainable tourism growth and tourism sector education, as well as “niche” forms of tourism, such as sports tourism, agri-tourism and wellness tourism, all with the aim of extending the holiday season I the eastern Mediterranean country and attracting more Austrian travelers in the autumn.
