Coroners say Zak Kostopoulos’ killing in Omonia linked to beating, broken glass
The shopowner and another man were seen on a video viewed all around the country kicking Costopoulos in the head as he tried to emerge from the bottom window of the store’s façade.
The death of Zak Kostopoulos, who was lynched outside a jewelry shop as multiple videos have shown, was caused by myocardial infarction caused by ischemia, linked to injuries from beating and broken glass, according to a report issued today by coroners Nikos Kalogrias and Soultana Marianou.
The shopowner and another man were seen on a video viewed all around the country kicking Costopoulos in the head as he tried to emerge from the bottom window of the store’s façade.
The two coroners said the death was brought on by ischemic changes caused by the blows of his attackers and by broken glass, from the shattered windowpanes of the shop.
It should be noted that testing showed that Kostopoulos was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he entered the shop for reasons still unknown.
The coroners said that the ischemic changes were found during histological testing.
Due to the absence of coronary heart disease or other diseases, what provoked the ischemic changes were injuries, through a stress mechanism, the report says.
The autopsy revealed multiple wounds to the body from glass, which were not deadly, as well as blows to the hands and legs and injury from hitting the ground, or another stationary object.
The ten-page report indicates that toxicological tests were clean, and that no narcotics were found.
