In 2015, GDP per capita in Greece was 16,294 euros, a 0.7 percentage point drop from 2014.

The wealthiest Greeks are the residents of Attica, who have the highest income level in the entire country, despite years of deep recession.

According to regional data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority, Attica in 2015 had GDP per capita of 22,192 euros (a 0,9 percentage point increase compared to 2014), followed by the Southern Aegean (18,153 euros, a 0.6 percentage point hike over the previous year), Western Macedonia (15,642 euros, a 4.2 percentage point drop) and the Ionian islands with a 2015 per capita income of 15,039 (a 0.2 percentage point rise).

The poorest regions

The poorest region in Greece in 2015 was still Epirus, with GDP per capita of 11,500 euros (a 1.1 percentage point drop).

Eastern Macedonia –Thrace had 11.164 euros GDP per capita (a 1.4 percentage point drop), followed by Western Greece with 12,097 euros (a 0.3 percentage point drop), Central Macedonia with 12,557 euros (a 0.3 percentage point rise), the Northern Aegean with 12,582 euros (a 2.3 percentage point drop), the Peloponnese with 13,358 euros GDP per capita (a 0.5 percentage point rise), Crete with 13.912 euros (identical to 2014), and mainland Greece (Sterea Ellada) with 14,117 euros (a 0.4 percentage point drop.

Gross value added data

As far as gross value added, the measure of the value of goods and services produced in an area, in 2015, for the entire country, it went down by 1.4 percentage points, to reach 155.5 million euros.

The greatest drops regionally in gross added value were in Western Macedonia (down by 5.1 percentage points), and the Northern Aegean (a 2.9 percentage point drop).

Gross value added increased in the Northern Aegean by 0.5 percentage points, in the Peloponnese by 0.1 percentage points, but remained unchanged in Crete.

The largest share of gross value added was produced in Attica (47.9 percent), followed by Central Macedonia (13.5 percent).

The Northern Aegean region produced the smallest share – just 1.4 percent.
