The role of George Papadopoulos, the ex-advisor to the campaign of US President Donald Trump, is turning into a bombshell for all who came into contact with the young Greek-American.

In a series of revealing tweets by American journalist Seth Abramson, it emerges that Papadopoulos may have played a much more crucial role in relations with Russia than the president’s circle has indicated over the last days, even as Papadopoulos continues to cooperate with the FBI, in the context of the ongoing Russia-Trump probe.

Abramson focuses especially on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Athens in May, 2016, when Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos greeted him at the airport. Noting Kammenos’ good relations with Putin, Abramson maintains Kammenos was a key figure in Papadopoulos’ international contacts during the 2016 US presidential campaign.

Papadopoulos’ trips to Athens as a member of the campaign team, his contacts with Greek officials such as Kammenos and photographs with the likes of Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos are highlighted.

If dates reported by the Greek daily Kathimerini are correct, Papadopoulos was in Athens during Putin’s May, 2016 visit, and in that period he met with Kammenos.

Abramson charges that the White House is lying when it maintains that Papadopoulos was a low-level Trump campaign advisor, and he cites his diplomatic contacts with Britain and Israel.

According to the journalist, Papadopoulos and Kammenos met on the sidelines of Trump’s inauguration. He also cites Papadopoulos involvement with the Middle East and regional energy issues, as well as his turn toward Russian issues and his mysterious removal from the Trump campaign.

Given all the above, the time has come for the defense minister to publicly answer the reports outlining his ties to Papadopoulos.
