The announcements over the last four years of the Association of Judges and Prosecutors had denounced the stance of the Tsipras government, which had repeatedly attacked the judiciary.

Everything that occurred during the tenure of Supreme Court Prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou, which ended on 30 June, is the story of lost opportunities for her but fortunately not for the judiciary, which resisted attempts to degrade it and thus protected democracy.

This government has repeatedly violated the spirit of the country’s Basic Law and sometimes even the letter.

The earsplitting revelations about the “friend” of a top minister and his ties to the Prime Minister’s office should have already been heard and duly noted by the judiciary.

Why did the PM hasten to express an opinion on a judicial case that is still under investigation? Who were the people who did not shield him from such an embarrassment?

By serving the populist and anti-political slogan “Everyone is on the take”, the PM is erring on many levels, because when you cultivate disdain for the entire political system, it is certain that such a generalisation will one day knock on your own door.

The decision to remand in custody former defence minister Yannοs Papantoniou is an indication that something is rotten in the state of Denmark, especially after the conviction and imprisonment of former defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos on similar charges.
