The anniversary demonstrations come at a time that Golden Dawn and other fascist and neo-Nazi groups in Thessaloniki and other cities are rearing their ugly heads – along with a variety of ultra-nationalist groups - in an apparent effort to demonstrate that they are not at all finished.
The neo-Nazi party failed to pass the three percent threshold to enter Parliament in the July, 2019, general elections and is now defunct. The committee approved the lifting of Lagos’s immunity by a huge margin – 22 in favour and two against.
Without exaggeration, in prosecuting Golden Dawn Greece has demonstrated internationally the value of unalloyed democratic principles in a world confronted with deep transitions.
The court’s decision conviction of Golden Dawn must serve as an opportunity to rethink the critical issues involved and to seek the causes that allowed this monstrosity to burgeon.
As PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined, “The trial of racism, prejudice, and violence in society is perpetual.” The outcome of this battle is a matter of the utmost importance for all of us.
