The women of Iran are demanding what should be self-evident: That they should decide for themselves whether or not to wear a head scarf, not because it is imposed by an authoritarian “morality police”.
It took the courageous stance of Sofia Bekatorou for mouths to open and for countless hidden incidents of harassment and sexual violence against women to be aired.
Disappointment must give way to the conviction that the exit from the crisis will signal the country’s modernisation in all sectors - including gender equality.
