The party had cultivated a progressive reformist image with an emphasis on liberal principles, meritocracy, and a restructuring of the productive base of the economy with a focus on agriculture, renewable energy sources and tourism.

'We must not examine only the individuals, but also the programme, which is to say an end to austerity, a social Europe, and emphasis on climate change,' diplomatic sources quoted Tsipras as saying.

Running on the “Piraeus Victorious” ticket, Marinakis garnered a whopping 13, 215 votes, nearly six times the number of votes given to the Councilman who placed second.

'[The Greek people will decide] whether they want us to carry on with a plan to support the many or whether they want to return to the darkness of austerity, of the IMF, of the yesterday that we all lived through,' Tsipras said.

Later the Singular Logic company that has been hired to administer the vote count projected a 9 percentage point spread between New Democracy and SYRIZA.

The exit poll results, if confirmed, would be a clear-cut strategic victoryfor ND, as both Alexis Tsipras and New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis framed the election as a vote of confidence in the government.

The erstwhile enemy of the bailout memorandums ended up accepting the third and worst adjustment programme and said that he did so in the name remaining in the eurozone, which until then he had blamed for all of the country’s ills.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said that if Tsipras is defeated in the 26 May European Parliament election “he should go to Zappeion Hall and announce his resignation and declare that elections will be held in four weeks”.

Mitsotakis has vowed to abolish university asylum, to clean up Exarcheia, and to abolish furloughs for those serving multiple life sentences, such as the former N17 terrorist group’s top gun, Dimitris Koufodinas.

Clearly, Tthe European Parliament elections it is not merely an opinion poll as the prime minister declared in order to downplay the significance of the electoral result.
