Αnother incident with Turkish fishermen firing warning shots at Greek fishermen has been revealed.

The incident occurred near the coast of the Greek island of Samothrace, two days before a similar incident near the island of Leros, but fishermen were instructed by Coast Guard officials to keep it under wraps.

Yannis Manios, who is president of the gri gri (nighttime) fishermen of Kavala, told SKAI television that a Greek fishermen, off the coast of Samothrace, reported that a Turkish fishermen fired gunshots in his direction.

“We had an incident west of Samothrace toward Lemnos, two days before the incident near Leros.  Following an argument between a Greek and a Turkish fisherman, the Turk fired gunshots. The Greek was plying forward on his fishing boat, and the Turkish fisherman wanted to pass by, and an argument ensued. Then the Turk pulled a gun and fired three shots, and then one series of rounds,” Manios said

The Hellenic Coast Guard advised the fishermen not to make a big thing out of the incident.

“The Coast Guard was informed. My colleague informed them immediately. However, the answer was that he [the fisherman] should say nothing, and not make a big thing out of the incident,” Manios said.

Manios said that there are constant complaints by Greek fishermen that they are being harassed by Turkish fishing boats.
