A police operation at the Moria refugee camp began this morning, on the heels of the violent clashes between refugees and migrants of different ethnicities as well as tent-burnings on 19 December, which sent 15 migrants to hospital.

Police sources say the operation is taking place in the area where the violent incidents raged for over four hours on Tuesday, and in which only men reside.

International organisations have repeatedly denounced the wretched conditions at the camp, where refugees and migrants live in tents not suitable for winter. Local authorities have not allowed competent state officials to install prefab structures as residences, for fear that the migrants may remain permanently.

Authorities said that they are reviewing the submission of asylum applications, and there have been inspections of the tents and makeshift shelters for evidence of possible illegal activity.
