Turkey freezes migrant re-admission accord with Greece

The move comes after Greece’s Council of State issued an irrevocable ruling granting asylum to eight Turkish military officers

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has announced that Ankara is suspending its re-admission agreement to Greece, Reuters has reported.

The move comes after Greece’s Council of State issued an irrevocable ruling granting asylum to eight Turkish military officers whom Ankara accuses of participation in the abortive July, 2016, coup against Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily and Anadolu News Agency reported that when Cavusoglu was asked what Ankara will do in response to the freeing of the eight Turkish officers, he responded that:

“The actions of Greece are not acceptable. Greece is the country that has attracted the largest number of coup plotters. The government truly wants to solve this. Greece is subjected to great pressure from the West, especially Greek judges. They are enduring great pressure from abroad. We also have a bilateral [migrant] re-admission agreement with Greece, and we have frozen that agreement. The process is not over yet, but our work with Greece will continue.”
