On the case of the two Greek officers jailed by Turkey, it seems that the government has become entrapped by its own miscalculations, as evidenced by Erdogan’s most recent, direct call for their exchange for eight Turkish officers seeking asylum in Greece, whom he has labeled as coup participants.
In polling terms, the case of the officers has cost the government more than its flip-flops on economic issues and the memorandums.
A Metron Analysis poll for Ta Nea’s Weekend Edition exhibited the deep dissatisfaction of Greeks with the handling of national issues, which returned to the limelight in large measure because of the officers. Until last January, foreign policy issues were not on the radar of polling companies, but now they are the third most important issue, right behind the economy and unemployment.
Hollow promises
Few have forgotten the promises of top government officials for a speedy return of the officers.
Critics blame the military leadership for not taking the necessary measures to prevent such a border incident, either due to a set-up by the Turks or human error on the part of the Greek officers, as they knew Ankara was picking for a fight.
The proper orders could have averted the capture of the Greek officers.
The second point of criticism is that the government delayed in internationalising the issue and the PM refused to call Erdogan, which many believe should have been done, even though such a call may not have produced any results.
Also, many wonder why Erdogan’s reference to an exchange of officers at the EU-Turkey summit in Varna was revealed only by the Turkey, and what the Greek PM’s reaction was at that time.
